Penn State Altoona has several means by which students can get stipends or course credit.
Course Credit
You can earn credits by taking a research-based course or working with a faculty member and enrolling in a research project (-294, -494). To earn credit, you will want to talk with your research mentor and/or academic adviser in order to complete the necessary paperwork.
Paid
There are many funding opportunities available for undergraduate researchers.
Mentors Must Apply
Undergraduate Research Grants: Faculty mentors may request funding to hire students to assist with research (up to $500 per semester and $1,500 for the summer).
Divisional awards: Some Divisions at Penn State Altoona have summer research grants. Please contact your Division Head for more information.
Other funding opportunities are available including the MC-REU program, SEDTAPP funding, and external grant funding. Funding amounts vary. Inquire with your faculty mentor for these discipline-specific opportunities).
Student Must Apply
Federal work-study awards: If you have received a federal work-study award, ask your mentor to contact the Undergraduate Research Coordinator at [email protected] in order to earn work-study wages for working on your project. Funding amounts vary.
Erickson Discovery Grant:Penn State system-wide award that supports students in intensive research or creative work during the summer ($3,500).
Student Engagement Network grants:Penn State system-wide award that supports students in undergraduate research (either $1,000 or $2,000).
Undergraduate Research Conference Travel Grant: Penn State undergraduates who are presenting the results of their research or creative work at national or regional professional conferences may request financial support to defray the costs of attendance at the conference. Funding amounts vary.
Volunteer
If earning course credit is not important or being paid is not an option, you can gain research experience by volunteering for a project or team. Be sure to still include your participation on your resume!
